Red Devils run away with game against Panthers

ATHENS — PikeView knew they had their hands full with Kennedy Award candidate Jalen Jones and the Oak Hill Red Devils.

Jones lived up to the hype with a 65-yard punt return and three more rushing touchdowns as they ran away from PikeView 62-6 last Friday night.

“Our kids played with lot energy. It’s kind of the same thing — we had people in place to make plays, but it just didn’t happen. We’ve just came to the conclusion that we’re a little inexperienced and undermanned to make the plays right now.

“It’s a growing process. We have a lot of young kids playing and gaining a lot of experience. The more they play the more they’ll start making the plays.”

Jones’ punt return started the scoring, but the Panthers had an answer.

PikeView kept it close as Jordan Hardin found his favorite wideout Logan McKinney for a 36-yard score. The point after try failed allowed Oak Hill to keep a 7-6 lead.

“We had planned on throwing some new things into the mix,” Wyatt said. “My hopes were it would work. We mixed in some play action passes and different things to keep them off-balance.

“They went with the old adage of if we can stop the pass, we’ll just send more people which we couldn’t handle. Through the first half quarter, it was interesting. Jones is a great ballplayer though and there aren’t too many teams who’ve stopped him all year.”

The Red Devils began to pull away as Jerell Green found the endzone for 10 yards out and Jones sprinted 60 yards for a score.

Jones added a 48-yard run to start the second then capped the quarter with a 29-yard touchdown. Green had a 40-yard score and Ray Sullivan’s 3-yard rumble made it 48-6 at the break.

“It was just a couple of things,” Wyatt said of how Oak Hill started to pull away. “It was a mistake here and a mistake there. Good teams take advantage of those opportunities and they did.

“Our kids played hard. We went in with attitude to play hard for four quarters and see what happens. I’m proud of our kids”

PikeView’s defense slowed down Oak Hill in the second half. Jacob Ashcroft had a 10-yard touchdown in the third and Tyler Painter rushed for a 46-yard score in the fourth.

Jones finished with 173 yards on four carries - three for scores. Green had 61 yards and two scores while Painter finished with 75 yards. Oak Hill rumbled for 473 yards on the ground.

“At the level’s he’s at, he’s probably the best around,” Wyatt said of Jones. “He’s got speed, he’s got strength. He’s got moves that you don’t coach. You don’t design the things he does.

“He doesn’t loose any speed. He’s best the player I’ve seen around here in a while. No one else has stopped him so we don’t feel bad.”

PikeView (0-9) closes out their season at Midland Trail (5-4).

The game was scheduled for Thursday night after being moved up for the state high school tournament.

As of Wednesday night, Wyatt hadn’t heard if the game would go on as scheduled. Fayette County has been out all week.

“It’s probably been in my coaching career the most messed up week I’ve had,” Wyatt said. “When the state’s under a state of emergency, you can’t really ask the kids to come out on the football field. Today [Wednesday] was the first time we tried to organize something and we had about 50 percent show.”

If the game isn’t played Thursday, options include moving the game to Friday and Saturday. Wyatt said it’s typical to let the home teams throw out options and then both teams agree.
