Jones tagged to lead Panthers

GARDNER — PikeView High School has named its third boys’ basketball coach this year.

The Mercer County Board of Education approved Lindsay Jones as the replacement for Jesse Lester. Lester resigned earlier this month, citing health concerns. Earlier this year, he was selected to replace William Anderson. A longtime coach at PikeView, Anderson retired following the end of last basketball season.

Jones will be the first alumnus to coach the school’s boys’ basketball team.

“I’ve put on the jersey before,” Jones said. “I know where a lot of these kids come from. I’ve been in their shoes before. It’s going to be a neat experience.”

Before getting the PikeView job, Jones served in the same capacity at Montcalm High School. He said he saw the Panthers’ varsity team play twice last year but reminded that a lot of those players graduated.

“I didn’t see the junior varsity or the ninth-grade teams at all last year,” Jones said. “I never got to see them. I don’t know what we’ll have.”

Still, Jones couldn’t stop smiling on Tuesday afternoon. Before he began his job as an assistant to Bobby Wyatt’s gridiron Panthers, Jones shook his head.

“It’s like a dream come true,” Jones said.
