ATHENS —
On a rainy Saturday at Callaghan Stadium, the Concord Mountain Lions fell behind the Winston-Salem State College Rams and fell short in a comeback, dropping the game, 30-22.
Concord (1-1) got off to a good start via their special teams, as Nick Spradlin blocked a WSSC punt and returned it 21 yards for a 7-0 score with 13:01 left in the first quarter (Andy Ellington kick).
The Rams (2-0) tied the score 7-all (Alejandr Suarez kick) as Brand McDonald hit Jamal Williams with a 10-yard scoring pass with 2:01 left in the first quarter. The nine-play, 81-yard drive saw Kameron Smith hit Jameze Massey with a 44-yard pass to get the Rams out of a hole, McDonald with a 11-yard gain and a 15-yard pass interference penalty against Concord as key plays.
The Rams’ defense set up the next visiting score as Dominique Tate intercepted and returned a Zack Grossi pass 44 yards. Five plays and 21 yards later, WSSC’s Maurice Lewis rushed for a touchdown to make it 14-7 Rams (Suarez kick) with 12:09 left in the first half.
The Rams’ special teams scored next in the game as they forced Concord punter Brad Cox into a safety, making the score 16-7 WSSC with 14:07 left in the game.
The Rams went up 23-7 (Suarez kick) with 11:57 left in the game as Smith hit Massey with a 73-yard touchdown.
Concord cut the lead to 23-15 as Grossi hit Ryan Stewart with a nine-yard score, then followed it up with a two-point conversion to Ansel Ponder with 10:36 left in the game. The four-play, 51-yard drive was set up by a 15-yard kick-off return by Chris Rodriquez and a penalty on the Rams and featured a 11-yard Grossi to Randall Hawkins pass.
Smith made it 30-15 Rams (Suarez kick) as he hit Ricky Rozier with a nine-yard score with 3:42 left in the game. The five-play, 75-yard drive saw two penalties called against Concord, Lewis with a 12-yard run and Smith connecting with Rozier on a 13-yard pass play.
Concord made the score 30-22 (Ellington kick) with 3:26 left in the game as Grossi hit Ponder with a 65-yard scoring pass.
The Rams then ran out the clock from there to end the game.
Winston-Salem was led by Lewis who rushed 25 times for 94 yards and a touchdown. Smith went 12-23 for 229 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.
Massey caught six passes for 173 yards and a touchdown. Malcom Rowe had six tackles, four unassisted.
Concord was led by Rodriquez with eight carries for 27 yards. Grossi went 23-39 for 269 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. Ponder caught seven passes for 117 yards and a touchdown. Jake Lilly had 13 tackles, nine solo and two for loss.
Concord returns to action 1 p.m. tomorrow when it hosts Charleston to open up West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference competition.
