PRINCETON —
More animals may be leaving the Mercer County Animal Shelter to go to their Home Sweet Home next week.
MCAS Director Lisa Williams said Monday afternoon the shelter will lower prices for adopting an animal for the week of Dec. 17-22. During that week, cats will be available for adoption for $10, and dogs will be $30.
“I’d like to move as many animals as possible,” Williams said, trying to explain what it would mean to see all of the animals in shelter find a home. “I don’t know that there are words for that. It would just be amazing.”
The shelter will also be selling baked goods, hot dogs and drinks during the event to raise money for shelter supplies. Williams reported that several area veterinarians and pet shops were also contributing to the drive, including Pet One, Personal Touch, and Petland. Veterinary Associates is offering a free wellness check and a flea dip to all animals adopted at the shelter.
Green Valley Animal Hospital is offering a percentage off from a visit to any animals adopted, and All Creatures Veterinary Clinic is giving 50 percent off of the bill if an animal at the shelter is found to be sick.
Williams said the idea for the Home Sweet Home drive came from County Commissioner Mike Vinciguerra. She said that he had called her and asked what the shelter could do to lower the fees. Williams suggested the Home Sweet Home drive because it tied into the homey feeling of Christmas.
Vinciguerra said he was inspired by Black Friday. He wondered why the shelter couldn’t have done something to attract more people. He said he asked Williams and County Coordinator Vicky Reed to look into it and they created the Home Sweet Home drive.
