PRINCETON —
PRINCETON — Mercer School parents might not have to worry as much about their children leaving the school next year.
The Mercer County Board of Education approved the school’s request recently to submit a Transportation Safety Grant application. If the school receives the grant, leaders hope to add flashing signs and make the crosswalk on Mercer Street more visible to passersby.
Principal Kelli Stanley said the school is unique in that it sits in an almost complete urban surrounding. With Mercer Street, Honaker Avenue, and North Walker carrying a lot of traffic, Stanley believes it’s very important to make passersby aware of the school and to be observant of the students crossing the streets.
“We’re trying to make the school safer,” Stanley said by phone. “We think this would improve the overall safety of the school.”
Stanley added that she discussed the potential additions with the school’s crossing guard, who agreed those changes were necessary for the safety of the students.
During the board of education meeting on Feb. 12, Director of Information Services Kellan Sarles indicated that the board hoped for other repairs around the school as well. Sarles said the grant could also fund repairs on the less-crowded Douglas Street. However, she didn’t expect the grant to be able to make all of the necessary repairs to that street’s sidewalks and crosswalk, particularly since the grant requires a 20 percent funding match by the board of education.
Stanley confirmed the school hopes to make repairs and the addition of flashing signs to Mercer Street.
“We’re hoping that the City of Princeton will be able to help with some of the repairs,” Sarles told the board.
Board President Greg Prudich was optimistic that the city would be able to help fund the project due to ongoing paving in the area.
