Commission needs more face time

PRINCETON — The Mercer County Commission will be taking a more active role in decision making in Mercer County.

Circuit Clerk Julie Ball, County Clerk Verlin Moye, Assessor Sharon Gearheart and Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Kelli Harshbarger held the first of several meetings between the commission and the county department heads Tuesday morning in the Courthouse.

Ball said the first meeting was scheduled to give the department heads a chance to explain their salary needs to the commission.

Moye echoed those comments. He added that at times there is a divide between the County Commission and the rest of the departments. In his view, the commission offices being on the third floor of the courthouse creates a psychological divide between the commissioners and the other departments.

“Is there a way that we could meet like this every month?” Moye asked the commission. “That way we could discuss issues that we have.”

Commission President Mike Vinciguerra agreed with Moye and Ball. He added that it was important for the commission to communicate with the department heads.

Ball believed that a good time was just before the commission's agenda setting meeting. That way, they could keep their issues in mind as they decide what to place on the agenda.

“We're going to meet every so often,” Vinciguerra said. “I'm not sure if once a month is going to be too much or not.”

Moye added that another motivation he had was to get to know the “new guy,” newly elected and sworn-in Commissioner Gene Buckner.
