Princeton family's pets perish in house fire

PRINCETON — A house fire Wednesday morning claimed a Princeton family’s beloved pets on Northview Addition.

The blaze started in the community just off of Athens Road briefly before 10 a.m. Firefighters from East River Volunteer and Princeton Fire departments, as well as Princeton Rescue Squad, responded to the scene, where the blaze originated in the kitchen.

ERVFD Chief Nelson Short reported that the flames were confined.

“The fire had almost burned itself out,” Short said, explaining that the resident home at the time the fire ignited had left the residence briefly.

“It’s appearing to us it came off of the stove; maybe an eye was left on,” Short said.

Neighbors who saw the fire opened the door and called inside to see if any residents were trapped in the home. Hearing no response, and unable to battle the smoke inside the structure, they awaited help from emergency responders.

Neighbors advised the family lost three dogs and three cats. Short could not confirm that number; he knew five animals perished inside the home. Firefighters located the pets and retrieved bedclothes from Princeton Rescue Squad to remove the animals from the home.

Short said the structure of the house appeared sound, despite fire, smoke and some water damage.

“The kitchen has quite a bit of charring, but everywhere else just has smoke damage,” he said.

One resident of the home sustained minor smoke inhalation injury, but he was examined by PRS personnel and released at the scene.
