Bailey now PFD chief

PRINCETON — The Princeton Fire Department has a new leader.

Capt. J.C. Bailey has been selected to replace the retiring Shawn Vest as chief of the Princeton Fire Department. Bailey competed with another member of the Princeton Fire Department to become chief.

Unlike the Princeton Police Department whose head is appointed by the Princeton City Council, candidates for fire chief are tested for their knowledge, and the test results are calculated with experience levels to determine who becomes chief.

“Basically, it was a promotion,” Bailey said. “It was myself and another member of the Princeton Fire Department, and they picked me.”

Bailey added that he was excited to follow Vest as chief. He had followed Vest through the ranks of the fire department, after he started there in 1995. Bailey said that his grandfather, who was the chief of police at the time, referred him to the Princeton Fire Department.

“I took the test and got started,” Bailey said. “I’d just like people to know that we’re still going to do everything we can to help people when they need it.”
