PRINCETON — The Mercer County Board of Education accepted the resignation of PikeView High School Physical Education teacher Jonathan Kirk Tuesday evening.
Kirk tendered his letter of resignation effective immediately on Jan. 28.
Board President Greg Prudich informed his fellow board members that Kirk allegedly violated Board Policy G-24(Employee Code of Conduct) by sending inappropriate messages and suggestions to female students.
Behind a motion from Vice President Gilbert "Gene" Bailey and a second from Mary Alice Kaufman, the board unanimously confirmed the resignation.
Prudich added that the matter was still under investigation by the Mercer County School system in order to comply with state law. By law, a copy of the investigation's findings must be sent to the state board of education.
Sgt. M.D. Clemons confirmed that the matter was also under investigation by the West Virginia State Police.
Upon learning of the allegations, Mercer County Schools Superintendent Deborah Akers met with Kirk and issued an immediate suspension for 30 working days on Jan. 15. The board of education also moved to approve the suspension Tuesday evening.
