From the Feb.9, 1978 Archives - Princeton to Purchase Water Tanker

PRINCETON — In order to relieve the water pressure hydrant problems the city had been facing the City Council decided to invite bids for a 2,000 gallon water tanker for firefighting services.

Called a "stopgap measure" and a "temporary solution" by Councilmen during the meeting, the action was the result of several weeks of searching for a solution to the low pressure coming from hydrants that prevented city firefighters from effectively putting out fires.

City officials were worried that a lack of pressure from the hydrants could cause a loss of life in a critical situation. The $33,000 tanker was expected to provide the most practical and immediate solution to the problem. Other councilmen, like Gene Bailey, didn't see the need for a stopgap measure, but for an answer to the real issue of low pressure in the hydrants, "We can carry enough on our trucks to put out a small fire, and a tanker wil not hau enough to put out a big one...we need a permanent solution."

In rebuttal, Councilman John Matthews said, "There is no magic wand which will rectify the problem in 30 days. The question is, to we want to sweat this out until it is rectified or take action for the problem areas in the interim."
