PRINCETON —
Results from a year-long study was presented to the City Council that suggested a "serpentine flow" of traffic on Mercer Street.
The Downtown Revitalization Review Committee concluded that the $8 million Balzer plan of 1976 be abandoned in favor of the new flow plan that involved diverting part of Route 20 traffic from Mercer street to Straley Avenue and Harrison Street. The DRRC maintained that although it was no longer a committee, it would do everything it could to keep the planned revitalization of downtown alive.
Opponents such as John Frazier worried that the merchants, who were overwhelmingly in favor of the revitalization plans, "[had] no real leadership among them...[and that] leadership should come from the City Council." Bob Graham, spokesman for the Harrison and Straley residents who opposed the parking and re-routed traffic proposed pointed out that perhaps the committee limited itself too much to merchants.
