PRINCETON —
Pearl S. Buck, author, humanitarian, and Nobel Prize winner spoke at Concord College Nov. 17, 1970.
The speech was sponsored by the Athens Women's Club and was one of many stops for Buck during a two week tour of her native West Virginia. She spoke to many high schools and colleges throughout the state on the theme of, "My Several Worlds As I See Them" and was based on her book "My Several Worlds."
The purpose of the tour was to enlist public interest and support of an Arts and Humanities program for West Virginia. It also coincided with the restoration of her Hillsboro home and the placement of the home on the National Register of Historic Buildings.
Buck, at the time, was the only woman to have won the Nobel Prize for Literature. She also won the Pulizer Prize and several other major literary awards for her work.
