From the November 4, 1999 Archives - Wal-Mart construction expands Greasy Ridge

PRINCETON — The construction of the new Wal-Mart on Greasy Ridge Road led to improvements on the road as well as Route 460. The anticipated increase in traffic volume had WV DOH and Wal-Mart officials discussing these improvements as well as anticipated delays at the West Virginia Tourists center located directly in front of the construction site.

WVDOH District 10 Office Engineer Wilson Butt said, "Wal-Mart has hired contractors to re-engineer Greasy Ridge in order to make it five lanes. They will pay for the construction and for the installation of traffic signals." He further stated that the Tourist Center would only experience temporary delays while construction is being done, and the center would probably show an increase of traffic once construction was finished.

DOH Assistant Engineer Darrell Allen said that the project was a joint effort between Wal-Mart and the DOH.

"Everything is in the early stages of development, but it will be done before the development itself is completed."

With other improvements such as the new Lowe's being constructed in the area, it was expected that developers to come to arrangements with the DOH and it was required for them to apply for a permit to enter onto a State Road.

In Wal-Mart's case, they requested to form a "joint venture" with the DOH to improve Greasy Ridge.

According to Allen, "That's good business, and the most successful of developers do it."
