From the January 12, 1978 Archives - Around Athens

PRINCETON — Frequently featured in the Times were articles from local writers describing the events that happened in their areas over the week. One of these writers was Berneice Brown who wrote "Around Athens Area." This is a summary of one of her articles.

•  Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Hall of Athens are the proud parents of a daughter named Jennifer Marie, born Jan. 5 at the Bluefield Sanitarium. Jennifer weighed 6 pounds, 11 ounces.

•  The regular meeting of the Sun Valley Ruritan men met Thursday night. Seventeen members were present for the dinner and welcomed new member Warren Pettry of Speedway. The regular club meeting announced the winners of the Christmas Decorating contest: First Prize was Rev. and Mrs. Fred Cook of Lerona, second prize went to Dale and Berneice Brown of Speedway, third place wwas John and Ethel Lilly of Speedway.

• Speedway wishes to welcome Mr. and Mrs Jim Asbury and family from Huntington. Mrs Asbury is the former Vaughn Pennington, daughter of RalphPennington.

• Get well wishes go to Leslie Kessinger, Atha Daniley, Arnette Cunningham, Shnnon Wimmer, Ozell Pennington and Ralph Pennington all of Speedway.

Clyde Puckett of Lerona spent a week's vacation at home during the holidays with his wife and family.

There was much more to report in the article. All about the comings and goings of life in and around the Speedway/Athens/Lerona area. Who was ill, who went where, and what clubs met and what was served as snacks by the wives and homemakers who held them. The full article is available at the Princeton Times office.
