PRINCETON —
Five families of make believe “hillbillies” from Mercer County trekked to Charleston to participate in the Centennial celebration of West Virginia Day.
This culmination of a two-year effort by the Mercer County families resulted in their participation in various parades, and a camp out on the lawn of the centennial commission lawn that bewildered commission employees and created an 1863 encampment.
Twenty-six members of five families: the Georges, Rolands, Prichetts, Baileys and Starlings, traveled the two-day trek over the Raleigh Grayson Turnpike in the authentic, hand-made wagons made of Mercer County white oak and irons that were made 10 years ago. They were also clothed in period 1863 costumes. The members of the participating families that constructed the wagon were: Jim Bailey, Jim Pritchard and Eugene Roland. Parts for the wagon and supplies were donated and purchased by persons in the Mercer and Bland counties.
