From the September 11, 1961 - Beaver football player beaten

PRINCETON — The Tigers began their football season in a home opener against Shady Springs the previous Saturday, but the win was overshadowed by a separate incident after the game.

Bluefield Beaver player, Johnny Land was, "jumped by a gang" and was taken to St. Luke's hospital in Bluefield where he was treated after being hit and kicked by at least four assailants according to State Police officials. Land suffered no major injuries and was, "just bruised up and [had] cuts on his hand and knee."

Despite the fear that school officials would cancel the Bluefield/Princeton game, Lambert Arington, principal of Bluefield High School, said there were no plans to do so. Land was expected to play in the upcoming game.
