From the July 5, 1979 Archives – Huges Impressed by County reception and asks for help from residents

PRINCETON — The people of Mercer County welcomed the new Superintendent of Schools, John Huges. The 40-year-old Kanawha County native said the position appealed to him when it became vacant because, “I have always had a desire to put together a school system based on my own philosophy.” He went on to say that he understood that there would be challenges to becoming the superintendent of Mercer County Schools; and that, “I have a lot to do with the board…[we] need to share the same goals and objectives. It is the biggest job I have.”

He also said that there were definite changes coming to the administration, mostly in areas of redefining responsibilities rather than replacement of personnel.

Huges asked for feedback from the Princeton community in regards to policies and procedures within the school system and guidelines to help guide the new administration during the transitional period.

Hughes said, “Volunteer committees are very valuable to the school system and their contributions should be given thought, not passed over and discarded.” He went on to say that some of the plans he was working on was to have a policy manual and hoped to have curriculum goals written down so his staff and volunteers could investigate the possibility of a change in status to the curriculum.
