PRINCETON —
When the Unification Church attempted to hold a meeting at the Princeton Public Library they were met with pickets bearing "anti-Moonie" messages.
Eight people picketed the meeting that was scheduled for Dec. 29, 1977 at the library. The protesters were led by the president of the International Foundation for Individual Freedom, Kenneth Conner. The group fought the estabilshment and movement of "cults" in the area. Signs they held bore slogans such as: "Let Our Children Go," "Moon-Prophet for Profit," and "Moon Saves with Slaves."
Jaime Sheeran, director of the Unification Church for the area described the meeting as a, "talk and discussion on the true meaning of Christian love" and gave pamphlets to people on the streets of Princeton prior to the meeting at the Library.
The meeting was disrupted several times by the IFIF members. Thirty observers to the meeting sang loudly and off-key when Unification Church members attempted to begin their meeting with song; the disruptors only stopped when Library Director Jerry Flanagan asked for the volume to be lowered to accommodate others studying close-by. The observers continued to disrupt Sheeran's meeting by shouting questions and jeering remarks despite Sheeran's request that all questions be held until after her presentation as per the format given.
Sheeran also attempted to give donations to the Library and the Salvation Army. Both donations were refused by their respective directors.
Tensions ran high at one point when Conner, shouting and demanding to be heard, was told by one Unification Church member to "shut up and let her speak" prompting Conner to jump up from his seat to confront the young man.
Sheeran, despite several attempts to disrupt her, continued the meeting as best as she could. Police were called and asked the crowd to disperse ten minutes before the meeting was scheduled to end in order to "keep the crowd from getting out of control."
