Slideshow: Lashmeet-Matoaka students get lesson in fighting fire
Kindergartners from Lashmeet-Matoaka School visit the Princeton Fire Department Friday morning during a field trip. During the session, Firefighters Keith Gunnoe and Charlie Croy led the students on a tour of the main station on Courthouse Road and let them check out the fire trucks. They also discussed how to draft a fire escape plan at home and the gear that a firefighter would wear if responding to a blaze at the children's homes. Upon the leaving PFD, the classes were slated to visit the Princeton Rescue Squad headquarters on Brick Street.

Slideshow: Princeton Rotarians applaud best of the club
The Rotary Club of Princeton held its annual dinner at the Chuck Mathena Center Tuesday night, featuring a keynote address by Molly Ballard, who successfully started an Interact Club at Poca High School. Among other highlights of the evening, were the award of the annual Rotary Scholarship to Joshua Cox, of PikeView High School; the introduction of the Joseph Marsh Legacy Award; recognition of Candy Stanley as the John Perry Volunteer of the Year; a salute to Carol and Herb McClaugherty, who shared Rotarian of the Year honors; and the presentation of Jeff Disibbio as a Paul Harris Fellow.

Princeton Boy Scouts listen in, as Athens Volunteer Fire Department Chief John Casey outlines the possibility of starting Fire and Emergency Services Career Exploring Post in Mercer County to expand interest in fighting fire and working in emergency situations. Fire and Emergency Service Career Exploring is open to young men and women ages 14-21years old. It is a hands-on program that exposes participants to many career experiences, leadership opportunities, and community service activities.

Slideshow: CU students visit Box City
For 24 hours, some Concord University students seized the opportunity to spend the night homeless. Beginning early Friday, May 3, the volunteers began constructing their makeshift shelters out of cardboard, plastic, sticks and other unusual building materials. Then, they spent the night on the campus lawn, all in a bid to raise awareness of homelessness and to help Scottie's Place, a southern West Virginia organization that benefits homeless children.

PikeView Middle School Dean of Students Rebecca Curry and teacher Roger Lokay smooched goats Thursday as part of a Junior National Honor Society fundraiser. PikeView Middle students, staffers, teachers and supporters donated coins as votes to determine who would kiss the goats. The top five vote-getters were: Rebecca Curry, Roger Lokay, Bill Curry, Jennifer Collis and Brittany Greenlief. The money raised will help fund an Honor Society trip to Busch Gardens in Williamsburg.

Concord University students, faculty and staff members go green for Earth Day, hosting a campus-wide clean-up event, complete with litter retrieval, flower planting, mulch placement and more. A Glow Green 5K race marked Earth Day, and the daylong clean-up took place on Monday, April 22.

Bus collision sends 13 children to hospital
A Mercer County Schools bus ran into the ditch Tuesday afternoon while attempting to avoid a crash with a motorist who crossed the center line on Pisgah Road, according to Mercer County Sheriff's Department Lt. J.E. Parks. Thirteen Melrose School students were transported to Princeton Community Hospital, but none of their injuries appeared life-threatening.
