Slideshow: Blaze ravages Matoaka building
A Matoaka structure that once housed a laundromat and three apartments burned to little more than rubble Friday, after a fire broke out between 5 and 5:30 a.m. Eight volunteer fire crews responded and extinguished the blaze at 104 Barger St., Matoaka, but by mid-morning, the second floor of the building had collapsed and rekindled the fire. As of 5 p.m., crews were still battling the flames and keeping a close eye on the structure's stability. Fire departments from Mullens to Oakvale assisted with the effort, and both the Lashmeet Ruritan Club and CASE West Virginia were reportedly working to assist the three families rendered homeless in the blaze. Fighting the fire also depleted the small town's water supply, which contained 300,000 gallons of water, according to witnesses at the scene.
