Inattention to details causes disruption in essential services

PRINCETON — About 20 years ago I was living in Cleveland, Ohio, and I entered a contest by sending in postcards with my name, address, and phone number. I had mailed 20 cards at one time, and within a few days I went to retrieve my mail, and there were five of my post cards in the box. I went straight over to our Post Office, asked to speak with the Post Master. The first thing I asked him was, “When individuals that the Civil Service examination for a postal carrier, do they have to know how to read?”

Naturally, his answer was, “Why do you ask?” and I told him of my dilemma. His response was that when I printed my information on the cards, I put them in the center, and the automatic mail reading machine thought that was where it had to go. I asked, “Doesn’t the carrier know that the address to where it is going is always on the side where the stamp is?”

I hate to inform you all that our DMV must have the same problem, because when my lady friend sent in her form from the doctor to acquire the new handicap placard, she received a form back telling her the doctor had not signed it. The big problem was that this form was for a male, not a female, and the name was, we believe, Walford. She called the DMV, and they told her to mail it back and they would correct the problem. That was two weeks ago, so she called them and was told the lady who handles this is on break. She said she would have to call back, but remember, that when she first called, it was just forty minutes after they had opened the office up.

She did not get a call back, so she called late in the afternoon and then was told the woman took a day off. Now if this is not the height of incompetence, I don’t know what is. We presume they will ask my lady friend to have a new form signed by her doctor. She is going to refuse. She is disabled and cannot be constantly running back and forth, plus she does not drive, either.

We have to assume that some of the folks working at the DMV either do not know their job, can’t read, or have no idea when one of their fellow workers are not even in the office.

Now, remember that our taxes and our automobile fees help pay for the wages of these employees, so I believe we all have a huge problem. I am getting so upset and frustrated with the way this state and country is going, it seems that nobody either knows what they are doing, or they just do not care.

I absolutely hate to see what it is going to be like in another 10 or 20 years. I am glad I will not be around that long to have to suffer with these inept people.
